INDIANAPOLIS — The Federal Transit Administration has awarded Indianapolis a $210 million Capital Investment Grant for the construction of IndyGo's Blue Line bus rapid transit corridor, the federal government's largest transit investment in Indianapolis history and a critical funding piece for a project that has been in planning for nearly a decade.

The Blue Line will run 24 miles from the Indianapolis Airport east along Washington Street and New York Street to the Hancock County line, connecting the airport, downtown Indianapolis, and the growing eastern suburbs with a dedicated-lane BRT service offering 12-minute peak frequency.

"This federal investment validates Indianapolis's vision for a connected transit system," said IndyGo CEO Inez Evans. "The Blue Line completes a crucial piece of the network we've been building — east-west across the city, connecting employment centers, residential neighborhoods, and the airport."

The federal grant covers approximately 40 percent of the Blue Line's estimated $520 million total project cost. The remaining funding will come from the Marion County transit referendum, state infrastructure funds, and a planned federal New Starts application for an additional $110 million expected to be filed later this year.

Construction Timeline

Subject to the completion of final environmental review and right-of-way acquisition, IndyGo projects construction to begin in late 2026, with service launch in 2029. The airport segment is expected to be the most complex, requiring coordination with the Indianapolis Airport Authority and the Indianapolis Airport Development Authority.
